McKee Jadite Screw-on Canister for Coffee, 48 OZ from 1931

Description

McKee Brothers Glass invented jadite (jadeite) glass in 1930 as an opaque mixture of unsold Milk Glass and unsold Thorium laced green glass.  The opaques, or opal ware as they called it became the rage in kitchens everywhere.  Here, as part of the  "NO. 12- 2 PIECE UTILITY JAR SET" is the 48 OZ coffee canister with screw-on top in polished aluminum.  Hazel Marie Weatherman shows a catalogue photo from a 1931 ad, and Sandra McPhee Stout shows the item on page 195 or her book, " The Complete Book of McKee Glass" copyright 1972. The basic mold was used in several different stenciled canisters such as Tea, Coffee, Sugar and Flour. (same page)  These are hard to find items because people threw them out with changing styles.  Jadite is now very much in, along with the other colors developed at McKee in Jeannette, Pennsylvania.  McKee turned over their plant in 1961 to Jeannette glass who continued making Jadite but changed the style to concentric rings as seen in Jeannette canisters, shakers etc.  Of course, this is a genuine piece of 1931 jadite and it glows under a black light reacting to the Thorium salts used in production from left-over depression green.  Thorium was used to enhance the green color.  This is a large piece of glass at 7.5" tall and 4" wide, weighing 3 pounds.
