Description
During his whole tenure, after his father's death in 1945, at the head of Maison Lalique between 1945 and 1976, Marc Lalique (René's son) alternated between modernizing the house's style and perpetuating his father's memory by designing pieces which "He would have drawn himself if he had had more time". The "Robinson" box of 1946 is definitely among the latter as it includes no less than 16 of the famous "moineaux" (sparrows), many in different positions. It is a large and heavy box as suitable for trinkets as for a pot-pourri, chocolates, nuts or anything such. The box itself is shaped as a deca-hexagone (16-faced bottle), in practice almost a circle, 10 cm (4") tall and 11 cm (4 1/3") in diametre. Its weight is 2 Lbs. The lid is surrounded near the top by a friese of 16 sparrows in different positions (photos 2 and 4). The signature, under the base (photo 5) is in script, "Lalique France", as is the case for all pieces made after René Lalique's death.
